The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Fellowship in Addiction Medicine is a one-year program that offers qualified physicians the unique opportunity to train in the evaluation and treatment of patients with substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Fellows are required to hold a valid New Jersey medical license and to have completed an accredited residency training program in any medical field in the United States or Canada. The 2019-2020 fellows will train at Rutgers from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2020. Graduates of the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Fellowship in Addiction Medicine will be eligible to sit for the American Board of Preventive Medicine certification examination in Addiction Medicine.
Addiction Medicine fellows will rotate on clinical services at University Hospital in Newark, the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System (East Orange and Lyons campuses), and Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (Newark and New Brunswick campuses). They will study motivational interviewing, behavior modification techniques, 12-step facilitation, and psychopharmacology specifically designed for this patient population. Our program has an especially diverse and collaborative addiction faculty, with supervising attendings in the departments of Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Anesthesiology. There are also opportunities for additional study in Medical Toxicology. Fellows will have access to the entire range of Rutgers teaching, clinical, and research services.
**As of February 2019, although we have already filled our 3 positions, we have now been approved by the ACGME for a 4th fellowship line! We have received a grant from the state to become a Center of Excellence in Medication-Assisted Treatment (COE) for northern New Jersey. We are developing a new ED-Bridge clinic to help initiate MAT and we are creating a novel peer navigator system to improve retention in care. We will also serve as a hub for MAT providers across northern NJ by staffing a "provider hotline" for MAT-related questions and hosting twice-weekly tele-consultation "drop-in" office hours. All four fellows will have a "COE rotation" that will be added into the yearly schedule, in addition to the rotations described above.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The application requirements for the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Fellowship in Addiction Medicine are the following:
1. Completion of residency training in any medical field accredited by the United States Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
2. Buprenorphine Certification (to be completed by the start of fellowship in July 2019)
3. Curriculum Vitae
4. Personal Statement outlining the applicant’s interest in Addiction Medicine (500-1,000 words).
5. Three letters of recommendation (1 from the program director if within 5 years of residency); letters should be from physicians who have worked directly with the applicant and who are not personal friends.
